BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2024/2025

 

 Dear Parents,

 Your child has joined the Battle of the Books at SASMS! 

This is a fun trivia battle between 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Students who join Battle of the Books will form a team (3-6 members), and the team will be responsible for reading all 15 books from the attached list. Each team will consist of 3 to 6 members in the same grade level. In March, we hold several rounds of playoffs much like a quiz bowl, in which teams earn points by answering questions about the books. We feel this program is very worthwhile since it motivates students to read some outstanding books for their grade level and helps increase their reading skills. The following are some tips to help your children do better as a team.

1. Though we have several copies of each book in our school library, it is also helpful to try to check out the books from the public library or to read them on Sora or another ebook app. to help our copies stretch.

2. In addition, please remind your children to read their books quickly and return them to the library so others get a chance to read them.

3. The students need to memorize authors and titles for the battles. We encourage them to use flash cards or take the list home to memorize authors. The questions will be formed “in which book does __________ happen?”  the students will then write the title and the author’s name.  We are very lenient on spelling.  They receive 2 points for the correct FULL title of the book and 1 point for the name of the author.

4. Encourage them to read and comprehend the books. Although students don't have to read all 15 books and can break it up among their team, we do encourage at least two people to read the same books just in case someone is absent on the days of the battles. On many teams the students decide that they will all read as many books as they can. These are usually the teams that do the best in the playoffs.
